Digital frames for trading cards: compare the options
You can test the idea with a screen you already own. The important differences are orientation, how images get onto the screen, ongoing costs and whether a product is available or still being developed.
We make CardFrame, so this is a comparison from a product maker, not an independent hardware review. The Aura and Apple details below come from their documentation, checked on 22 September 2026. We have not tested those devices side by side.
Two photo frames with different proportions
Aura’s current comparison guide lists Carver Mat as a 10.1-inch landscape frame with a 1280 × 800 display, and Parker as a 10.2-inch 1280 × 960 frame that rotates between portrait and landscape. It says its frames use Wi-Fi and the Aura app, with no subscription charge for the listed features. These are manufacturer claims, not our measurements. Source: Aura’s frame comparison guide.
This corrects our earlier blanket statement that photo frames rarely support portrait orientation. Check the actual model. Retail prices vary by country and promotion; we have not verified a delivered local quote for the third-party frames. Compare the final checkout totals in the same currency. CardFrame’s 57 EUR reservation is a deposit toward its 447 EUR total, not the hardware’s full price.
Start with an existing tablet
Apple documents selecting photos and running a slideshow in the iPad Photos app. The controls depend on the software version. That makes an existing device a practical way to explore your preferred set of images before committing to dedicated hardware. Source: Apple’s slideshow guide.
Our suggested trial: choose five images, place the tablet where a frame would go, and check readability from your usual seat. Try daylight and evening conditions. Note reflections, cable placement and how often you want to change the image. This is a proposed exercise, not a device benchmark.
What CardFrame has and has not demonstrated
The free local preview accepts one JPEG, PNG or WebP, offers whole-image fit or crop, and opens an expanded display. It does not identify cards, import a collection database or generate extended art. The hardware’s enclosure, capture workflow, final specifications and compatibility still need documented validation. See the dated build status.
Standard scanning, imports and display are intended to be included with the frame; optional heavier AI features are a future possibility. Treat those as plans. The existing founders offer is fully refundable, with an automatic refund if units have not shipped by June 2027. Read the complete reservation terms.
